The transformation of East New York is nearing a significant milestone with the Human Resources Administration (HRA) building at Broadway Junction almost completed. Announced over two years ago by Mayor Eric Adams, this project is a central element of his Community and Reinvestment Strategy (CARE). The new facility promises to enhance access to essential services for local residents while bolstering the neighborhood’s economic development.
A Vision Realized: The CARE Strategy
Mayor Eric Adams introduced the CARE strategy as a holistic approach to uplift community well-being across New York City. The HRA building is a key component of this vision, offering a centralized hub for vital social services aimed at supporting families, individuals, and vulnerable populations. The facility will streamline access to crucial resources, including food assistance, healthcare, and job training programs, improving the quality of life for countless residents.
According to an exclusive statement from an HRA representative to NYC Newswire, the new facility will create “about 1,200 jobs in total, with services and employees being introduced in phases following the installation of necessary technology and infrastructure.” HRA said the building is expected to be finished by the end of the year but workers will start to occupy the building in 2025.
Construction Progress at Broadway Junction
Recent images and video footage shared by NYC Newswire showcase the nearing completion of the building, highlighting its modern design and functional architecture. The facility is set to feature ample space for service delivery, community meetings, and educational programs, making it a vital resource for East New York residents.
Located at the Broadway Junction transit hub, the HRA building’s strategic placement ensures easy accessibility for residents. With numerous subway and bus lines nearby, accessing the support services will be more convenient, making it a central point for the community.
The HRA spokesperson added, “We expect construction to be completed around the end of 2024. However, following the building’s completion, it will take several months for DSS-HRA to install the necessary infrastructure and technological systems. Therefore, we do not anticipate occupying the site until sometime in 2025.”
Anticipated Community Impact
The HRA building is expected to play a transformative role in East New York. Community advocates have long highlighted the need for more accessible social services in the area, which has faced economic challenges for years. By consolidating various resources in one location, the HRA aims to reduce barriers to access, ensuring residents receive timely and comprehensive support.
The project aligns with broader efforts to revitalize East New York, a neighborhood that has historically faced economic disparities. By investing in this new infrastructure, the city aims to create a more equitable environment, fostering growth and development in an underserved community.
A Hub for Community Engagement
As the project progresses towards its official opening, excitement is building within the community. Residents hope the new HRA building will serve not only as a service center but also as a hub for community engagement and empowerment. While DSS-HRA will be the sole city agency in the building, the facility will include commercial space on the ground floor. However, details on additional commercial tenants have yet to be announced.
The nearing completion of the HRA building at Broadway Junction marks a pivotal step forward for East New York. As the city embraces the principles of the CARE strategy, this facility stands as a testament to the potential of community-focused initiatives to drive positive change and uplift neighborhoods in need.
