Teamsters to Launch Largest Strike Against Amazon
Beginning at 6 a.m. EST on Thursday, December 19, the Teamsters will launch the largest strike against Amazon in U.S. history. The nationwide action comes in response to Amazon’s refusal to bargain with thousands of workers who have organized under the Teamsters.
A Stand Against Corporate Greed
Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien did not hold back in his statement. “If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed. We gave Amazon a clear deadline to come to the table and do right by our members. They ignored it,” O’Brien said. He condemned Amazon executives for failing to show respect for the workers who drive their profits, stating, “This strike is on them.”
Nationwide Action with Key Locations
Picket lines will form at major Amazon facilities, including DBK4 in New York City, DGT8 in Atlanta, and several sites in California, San Francisco, and Skokie, Illinois. Additional picket lines will be established at hundreds of Amazon Fulfillment Centers across the country. Teamsters are also calling on non-union Amazon warehouse workers and drivers to exercise their legal right to honor these picket lines.
Workers Demand Respect and Fairness
“This is historic,” said Leah Pensler, a warehouse worker in San Francisco. “We are fighting against a vicious union-busting campaign, and we are going to win.”
Despite being the second-largest corporation on the Fortune 500, worth more than $2 trillion, Amazon has been criticized for failing to provide workers with adequate wages and working conditions. “Amazon does not respect us or our right to negotiate,” said Gabriel Irizarry, a driver in Illinois. “We can’t even afford to pay our bills.”
A Growing Movement for Change
Nearly 10,000 Amazon workers have joined the Teamsters, uniting in their demands for higher wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions. “I’ve seen the Teamsters win big battles,” said Dia Ortiz, a New York worker. “We’re ready to do what it takes to win this one.”
