Gender equity theater group seeks new home after content restrictions
After eight years of producing groundbreaking theater by women, trans, and nonbinary writers at the iconic Connelly Theater, SheNYC Arts—the nation’s leading organization promoting gender equity in the entertainment industry—is facing an unexpected challenge. New content restrictions imposed by the Archdiocese of New York, which owns the building housing the theater, have forced SheNYC Arts to seek a new venue for its productions.
Connelly Theater’s New Content Guidelines
The shift comes as a result of changes in leadership at the Archdiocese, which has directed the Connelly Theater to reject any shows that conflict with Catholic teachings. Specifically, productions centered on reproductive rights, trans characters, and gender equity have been deemed inappropriate for the space. In a move that has raised eyebrows across the city, a priest overseeing the theater’s operations is personally screening scripts to ensure they align with the church’s strict doctrines.
“The Archdiocese has singled out our past productions, labeling them ‘inappropriate’ for addressing issues like reproductive rights and gender,” said Danielle DeMatteo, Founder & Artistic Director of SheNYC Arts. “It’s shocking to see this level of censorship in New York City, especially with an election on the horizon that could shape the future of our rights.”
SheNYC Arts Stands Its Ground
SheNYC Arts has called the Connelly Theater home for nearly a decade, but the organization refuses to compromise its mission. “We’re heartbroken to leave, but we will not back down on our commitment to elevating diverse voices and telling stories that champion gender equity,” DeMatteo emphasized. “We’ve been told not to renew our contract for 2025, but we’re turning to our community to help us find a new space where our artists can continue to thrive.”
The organization, known for amplifying underrepresented voices in the arts, has sparked vital conversations through its productions, tackling issues many other theaters shy away from. Its annual SheNYC Summer Theater Festival, which will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in 2025, has become a cornerstone of inclusive storytelling, attracting over 35,000 attendees nationwide since its inception.
Searching for a New Stage and Support
As SheNYC Arts embarks on this new chapter, it’s not just seeking a physical space but also financial backing. “This is a tough moment for us, but it’s also a time of growth and renewal,” DeMatteo said. “We’ve already received an overwhelming amount of support, and we invite anyone who believes in the power of inclusive theater to join us on this journey.”
The organization is actively exploring new venue options for its 2025 festival while also welcoming donations and sponsorships. Those interested in supporting SheNYC Arts can visit shenycarts.org for more information.
A Commitment to Artistic Freedom
Despite the setback, SheNYC Arts remains firmly rooted in its founding values of equity, inclusion, and artistic freedom. As it transitions away from the Connelly Theater, the group is inspired by the resilience of New York’s theater community and its ability to foster change through original, daring storytelling.
This crossroads marks both a challenge and an opportunity for SheNYC Arts, and the organization is determined to continue making waves in the city that never sleeps.
