The Neighborhood Housing Services of Queens (NHS Queens) celebrated the opening of its new headquarters, “La Casita,” in Elmhurst on Monday with a visit from U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. On September 2, the non-profit officially moved into its new location at 94-33 Corona Avenue, thanks to $2.4 million in federal community improvement financing obtained through FY 2023 appropriations.

Jackson Heights, Corona, Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside, East Elmhurst, and Long Island City citizens have been receiving housing and financial advising services from NHS Queens for over 30 years. The group is prepared to broaden its purpose with this permanent home.

Expanding Services at “La Casita”

Programs at the new office will include financial literacy, credit repair courses, workforce training programs, and counseling on foreclosure prevention and first-time homebuyer education.

Ocasio-Cortez claimed that the new headquarters guarantees that even more New Yorkers will have access to vital housing services, highlighting NHS Queens’ long history of helping families and vulnerable communities.

“It was an honor to be able to secure $2.4 million in federal funds to help give this organization a permanent home in Queens,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “NHS Queens is a bedrock in our community, helping thousands of our constituents keep their homes and find work. ‘La Casita’ will allow them to expand their reach even further.”

A Milestone for NHS Queens

NHS Queens Executive Director Yoselin Genao Estrella called the headquarters a symbol of both stability and hope for the community.

“This new headquarters will serve not only as a home for that mission, but also as a beacon of hope, proudly serving residents in Queens and across New York City,” Genao Estrella said.

As NHS Queens celebrates its 30th anniversary, the organization says the investment will allow it to continue building housing stability, financial opportunity, and community empowerment for generations to come.
