Today, it was announced that the Utility Workers Union of America (Local 1-2 Affiliated with AFL-CIO) has endorsed Chris Legree for District Leader in the 55th Assembly District in Brooklyn, which covers all of Brownsville and parts of East New York and Bedford Stuyvesant.
“Chris’s community involvement through the Mo Better Leadership Academy during the past two decades has formed the characters of thousands of striving young people in the 55th Assembly District. Helping young men and women achieve their dreams through athletics and education is a legacy on which to build”, stated James T. Slevin, President of Local 1-2, NY, UWUA, AFL-IO.
This endorsement is significant, as it comes just two days after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s landslide victory over 10 term incumbent, and Queens Democratic Party Chair, Joseph Crowley. Ocasio-Cortez is a first time political candidate, who is running a grassroots campaign, connecting directly to the people.
Like Ocasio-Cortez, Legree’s campaign has been concentrating on connecting directly with the residents of the community. Recently, Legree was an active supporter of the Brownsville Health and Wellness Family Day event in Brownsville’s Howard Houses, which brought out families, youth, educators, elected officials and health advocates. Latrice Walker, the Assemblywoman of the 55th Assembly District was also on hand at the event, which included collaboration between Healthy NYC, Brownsville Collaborative Middle School, Emblem Health, AdvantageCare, UnitedHealthcare, and a list of community-based organizations.
“This endorsement means a lot to me. I never do community work for recognition, but it’s always nice to be recognized. I’m looking to do a lot more within the community, in terms of healthy living, advocating for truly affordable housing, increasing activities for our youth and I would love to see brand new housing for our seniors”, stated Legree.
