Councilman Rafael Espinal Seeking Public Advocate Seat

Posted By NYC Newswire

Councilman, Rafael Espinal, who represents East New York, Cypress Hills, Bushwick, City Line, and Ocean Hill Brownsville, is seeking to become the next Public Advocate for New York City.  The seat will be vacant after Tish James takes over as the next NY State Attorney General in January 2019.

According to an article in the NY Times, Mr. Espinal would focus his efforts, he said, on the city’s livability issues, like congestion and escalating rents. “One of the most important roles as a council member is to put legislation forward and to work to improve the city,” Mr. Espinal said. “The public advocacy is an extension of that, and it will allow me to do the work on a broader scale that will benefit all New Yorkers.”

Espinal will be running against Council members, Eric Ulrich and Jumaane Williams, as well as Assemblymen Daniel O’Donnell and Michael Blake.  Others who are looking to run are Nomiki Konst and Dawn Smalls.

Mayor de Blasio will call a special election, which many expect will take place in February 2019.
